To visit Russia, you generally need a visa. You can visit Russia on a tourist, transit, private (guest), business, working or educational visa. It is attached to your passport, which shows the basic information about its owner, category and duration of the visa itself. For a normal tourist trip, the “tourism” visa category fits best, so that’s what we’re mainly looking at here.
Duration and cost of a tourist visa: 

A tourist visa to Russia is issued for a period of up to 30 days and can be single (one entry and one exit from the country) or multiple  (two entries and exits). A multiple entry visa is issued if your route involves leaving Russia for a third country, and then returning from it into Russian territory. (For issuing a multiple -entry visa, the route must be specified in the confirmation of acceptance of a foreign tourist, issued by the Russian host organization.)

Extending a Russian visa is not possible, and sanctions for exceeding it are pretty severe, including having to stay in the country till you get a new visa, and then a 5-year ban on visiting Russia. Therefore, it is strongly recommended you ensure you comply with the terms of visiting the country so that you don’t outstay your visa.

Normally, a visa is issued within 14 working days after you apply, but you can order an urgent (7 days) at extra expense.

STEP 1 (you should mail the following items to us):

• Valid

   

  U.S. passport

   

  or

   

  international travel passport

  from another country;

• If the applicant is a citizen of another foreign country and lives permanently in the U.S., a

   

  copy of the immigration status in the U.S.

   (green card, work visa, etc.)

Important! The passport must be valid for 6 months or longer after the Russian travel visa expires.  Also, the passport must have the signature of the owner inside.

STEP 2 — (you should email the following items to us):

• Passport photo taken within the last 6 months. You can have someone take your picture with a phone and then email it to us without editing. A plain white background is required. We will edit, crop and print out the photo for you. No extra charge will be applied;

• If you need a visa for a minor, a copy of his or her birth certificate is required along with copies of the parents’ travel passports and their marriage certificate (if married);

• Citizens of former USSR countries must provide copies of documents proving that they don’t have Russian citizenship (for example: a copy of your passport from another CIS country with exit stamps; copies of documents proving that you left the USSR for permanent residence in another country before February 6th, 1992; copies of documents proving your renouncement of Russian citizenship). Please pay special attention that any foreign citizen entering Russia must be registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation within 3 days after the date of entry.
